Dr Dre was born on Feb 18 1965, and given the name Andre Romelle Young, in Compton, California. He is the son of Verna Young and Theodore Young. His father was a musician, and he derived Dre’s middle name Romells from an amateur R&B group that he was part of.

Dre is a renowned American rapper, record executive, audio engineer, record producer and entrepreneur. His music career began in the mid-’80s when he became a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru. He later joined the gangsta rap group NW, which popularized explicit lyrics that detailed street life violence in hip hop. Here he found fame.

Today, Dr Dre is the founder and CEO of Beats Electronics (headphones company) and Aftermath Entertainment. He previously co-owned Death Row records. Dre has accreditation for playing a significant role in popularizing West Coast G-funk in the early 1990s. This hip hop subgenre is by slow, heavy beats and a synthesizer foundation.

Music Career

Dr Dre’s music career has been a highly successful one. In 1992, he released his solo debut album, The Chronic, under Death Row Records. It was a significant hit in the music industry and made him one of the best selling American music artists of 1993.

Music Production

Dre’s prowess as a producer sores as high as that of his rap career. In 1993, he produced his Death Row labelmate Snoop Doggy Dogg’s debut album Doggystyle. He also mentored various producers, such as his stepbrother Warren G and led to the debut of the multi-platinum Regulate, G Funk Era, in 1994.

Daz Dillinger, Snoop Dog’s cousin, was also a beneficiary of Dr Dre’s mentorship efforts. He led him to produce the double-platinum debut Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound in 1995.

Record Label

After making these accomplishments and many more, Dr Dre left Death Row Records to establish Aftermath Entertainment. Here he produced a couple of his albums, such as the compilation album Dr Dre Presents the Aftermath in 1996.

He also released the solo album 2001 in 1999 and then shifted his focus to producing music for other artists in the 2000s, occasionally taking to the booth to contribute vocals.

He signed Eminem to his label in 1998 and 50 Cent in 2002 and co-produced their albums. He has also overseen careers and produced high ranking albums for other famous artists.

In addition to making a significant impact in the music industry, Dr Dre is also renowned for his various screen appearances. He has had roles in movies such as Training Day, Set It Off, and The Wash.

Over the years, Dre has attained six Grammy Awards, including a Producer of the Year award. He was ranked number 56 on the list of 100 most significant artists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
